OnePlus 5T Rumours: Release Date, UK Price, Features & Specifications

OnePlus 5T could be announced on 5 November. We round-up the rumours on the new OnePlus 5T specifications, features, price and UK launch date.
We’ve seen a ’T’ suffixed OnePlus before in the OnePlus 3T. That phone arrived six months after the OnePlus 3, so the timing is right here for a successor to the OnePlus 5 in the OnePlus 5T. However, rumours of a leaked event invite for 5 November have been confirmed false by OnePlus.
The original T model OnePlus in essence gave the handset a speed boost, moving from the 2.2GHz Snapdragon 820 in the OnePlus 3 to the 2.35GHz Snapdragon 821 in the 3T. The new chip offered a 10 percent performance boost.
OnePlus also upgraded the selfie camera from an 8Mp model to a 16Mp version that performed better in low light, and it increased the battery capacity from 3000mAh to 3400mAh. A new 128GB storage model was also introduced.
There were no design changes other than a new darker shade of grey on the rear of the device.
The OnePlus 5T could see a similar ‘point’ upgrade. Already one of the fastest phones we’ve seen in 2017 with the Snapdragon 835 processor and 6GB of RAM, might the OnePlus 5T feature the Snapdragon 836 rumoured to go in (but not ready in time for) the Pixel 2?
Probably not, since it has since been suggested that the existence of a Snapdragon 836 is no more than a rumour, and the next big upgrade Qualcomm is concentrating on is the Snapdragon 845. That’s the chip we expect to see in the Galaxy S9 and LG G7 in early 2018.
It turns out Qualcomm had actually been working on a Snapdragon 636 chip, which it expects to bring bezel-less designs to mid-range phones, and this may be where some of the confusion arose.
It’s perhaps more likely that we see an upgrade to the screen than to core performance.
Gizmochina published an image of what it says is the OnePlus 5T, but the image is identical to the leaked Oppo F5. That’s not actually as unlikely as it might sound, given that the OnePlus 5 is identical to the Oppo R11. Although the two companies are now said to be entirely separate, they do have shared origins.
The fact it may look more like the Oppo F5 than the R11, however, suggests that we may see the introduction of an 18:9 full-screen display. This would allow the OnePlus 5T to compete more closely with the likes of the Samsung Galaxy S8 and LG G6.
When is the OnePlus 5T release date?
We have to be honest here and say we’re not even convinced the OnePlus 5T is going to be announced. A fake event invitation and a picture that may actually be the Oppo F5 are not enough to persuade us.
However, OnePlus has produced a halfway upgrade before, and the omission of an 18:9 display in its current flagship is a bit of a misstep if it wants to be known as a flagship killer.
Plus there’s the fact it’s becoming increasingly difficult to buy the OnePlus 5, which is no longer in stock on the official site.
It’s just possible that although the event invitation itself is a fake, the OnePlus 5T could be real - as could be the launch date.
We’ll keep our eyes and ears open for any news and update this article accordingly.
How much will the OnePlus 5T cost in the UK?
Should a OnePlus 5T be announced, it’s unlikely that it will cost significantly more that the current OnePlus 5. That phone retails from £449 - or at least it does when it is in stock.
Currently you can still obtain a OnePlus 5 via O2 where it costs from £41 per month or from £499 PAYG.
